Sclerotherapy Q & A
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is one method for the treatment of spider veins, varicose veins, and venous malformations. In ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, ultrasound is used to visualize the underlying vein so that Dr. Madan can deliver and monitor the injection. Sclerotherapy often takes place under ultrasound guidance after venous abnormalities have been diagnosed with duplex ultrasound. Sclerotherapy under ultrasound guidance using microfoam sclerosants is call foam sclerotherapy.
What happens during a sclerotherapy session?
During ultrasound sclerotherapy, Dr. Madan injects a medication into the abnormally affected veins. This sclerosant irritates the inside of the vein, causing it to collapse. Your body will then absorb the vein, and it fades away over time. If you have many spider or varicose veins, you may need more than one treatment session. Dr. Madan can deliver multiple injections during each treatment session. To ensure accuracy and safety, Dr. Madan performs sclerotherapy using ultrasound guidance, which gives him a live view of your veins.
Are there any restrictions after sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure with minimal restrictions after the procedure. Most patients can return to their daily activities right away. It's best to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and hot baths for the next few days. Dr. Madan can help you decide when to resume your usual exercise program.
